More on toxic load: Ingredient Alert!! The Dangers of Sodium Benzoate.
On our quest to eat a healthy diet and spare our body a lot of extra work filtering out the junk, it isn’t always easy to recognize the dangerous ingredients in the foods we eat because they often sound okay. These nasty substances may even be present in so-called “natural” products that we take the time and care to seek out! One of the main offenders in this regard is something called SODIUM BENZOATE.
Sodium Benzoate is a cheap mold-inhibitor that is used to extend the shelf-life of many acidic foods. It is man-made in a lab by mixing benzoic acid (found in small amounts in some fruits) with sodium hydroxide. What you end up with is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, a known carcinogen (cancer-causer). Why is it so bad? Well, before it gets to the liver to be filtered out and excreted in the urine, it actually blocks nutrients and oxygen from getting into your cells, compromising their function and sometimes even shutting them down completely. At the very least though, your cells lose their ability to fight off infection and disease.
So why is this nasty chemical even allowed in our food? Well, the FDA assures us that a very small, safe amount is used as an edible preservative. The problem, however, is twofold:
First, if you check the ingredient lists of the products in your pantry and refrigerator, you’ll find sodium benzoate all over the place! It’s used in most packaged, acidic foods like pickles, peppers, salad dressings, jams and jellies, condiments, vinegar, fruit juices, salsa, dips, shredded cheese, ketchup, and soda, both diet and regular. In addition to the edible products, it is also in your cosmetics, dental-care products, and some cough medicines. If you ingest/use only a few of these products on a daily basis, which doesn’t sound unreasonable, you aren’t just taking in a small, safe amount of sodium benzoate.
And to top it all off, when sodium benzoate is mixed with Vitamin C or Vitamin E (not just in supplement form but as it occurs in food), it turns into something called Benzene, which causes cancer among other issues (please check out http://scorecard.goodguide.com/chemical-profiles/summary.tcl?edf_substance_id=71-43-2 to get a better idea of the ramifications of this chemical). Going back to the list of products that often include sodium benzoate, notice that many of them also have Vitamin C or E in the form of fruits and veggies. Also check soft drink ingredients for signs of fruit juice concentrate in addition to sodium benzoate. Red flag!
Let’s face it – processed-food manufacturers must somehow extend the shelf-life of their products in order to avoid big losses. The cheapest way to do that is through the use of chemical preservatives like sodium benzoate. Unfortunately, although it makes processed food last longer, it does quite the opposite to our bodies! Like all toxins, it has a cumulatively negative effect on our health that ultimately results in immune deficiency and disease. It literally becomes impossible for the immune system to continue to keep up with this, and all of the other challenges we throw at it. And to think that most of the time we don’t even realize what we are doing!
So do yourself a BIG favor and take one more step towards optimal health – check the ingredient lists and avoid Sodium Benzoate! Explore the organic section of your grocery store for similar products without this toxic preservative. You must be your own health advocate and never assume that a product must be okay just because it’s on the shelf!
