The easiest way possible to get more energy and help your hormones.
Without water, the body can’t live. Probably everyone would accept that as a fact. But what happens when we drink water, but we just don’t drink enough water? And what is enough water anyway?
I can tell you this: it’s impossible to get and stay healthy if you are dehydrated.
The bummer of it is, more of us are dehydrated than you might imagine. As a result, the number of people suffering from pain, excess weight, lack of energy, hormone imbalance and countless other common health concerns is far higher than it needs to be. All of those things can be reversed with optimal water intake.
Sounds too simple, doesn’t it? Think about it – you can only live about 10 days without water, whereas you can live without eating for months! That’s because when you are dehydrated, the body looks for a way to save itself by pulling water from important tissue like muscle. Not only that but any healing that takes place in your body needs water to happen. So right off the bat, if you’re dehydrated you’re definitely not in any position to heal.

● For all of you who want/need to lose weight, even mild dehydration slows down metabolism as much as 3%! Plus, research shows that drinking water eliminates hunger pangs, making it easier to avoid overeating.
● And then there’s this for all of you who experience that late afternoon energy “crash”: Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
● Pain can worsen due to dehydration. Studies indicate that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain in 80% of cases. Now that isn’t just for specific types of pain, but whatever the root cause, water will help alleviate it!
● When it comes to serious disease, water also plays a significantly beneficial role. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily was found to decrease the risk of colon and bladder cancers by 45-50%.
Drink water to get more energy. But how much water and when?
The amount of water you should drink for optimal health varies based on things like your size, your activity level and even climate. A good place to start is with sixty-four ounces per day of pure, filtered water. If you’re moderately active, drink even more. Remember, no matter how healthy your lifestyle is otherwise, if you become dehydrated nothing else matters! Your health, and energy, will struggle due to that one simple deficiency.
When to drink water? Well, it’ll really add up if you start as early in the day as possible. My favorite routine is to squeeze the juice from half of a lemon into a lukewarm 8-ounce glass of water and drink it right when I wake up, on an empty stomach, prior to eating breakfast. If lemon is not your thing, no worries. Substituting plain (filtered) water is perfectly fine. Either option will flush out waste products left from a long night of “housekeeping” performed by your liver. You’ll be surprised how much this early morning routine will boost your energy simply by keeping your cells saturated.
So you’re bored with water?
Guilty as charged. I’m constantly looking for healthy alternatives to plain water. There’s nothing wrong with adding a few squirts of lemon or lime juice to your water at any time of the day. I meant to mention this earlier, but lemon or lime-infused water also benefits health by promoting tissue alkalinity, which helps you maintain a healthy pH to avoid health issues ranging from inflammation to cancer.
Organic decaffeinated herbal tea, which is plentiful in the grocery stores, is a healthy option. Depending on the type of tea you choose, there are plenty of health benefits to be had including cholesterol control, protection of skin and arteries, and prevention of stroke and diabetes. My favorites are ginger leaf, dandelion root, and peppermint. The ginger and peppermint are very helpful to digestion, and the dandelion root (perfect if you like a deeper, “smokier” flavor) is incredibly supportive for your liver and detoxification or as a diuretic.
What is stevia and is it healthy?
You’ll find a ton of water alternatives that contain sugar, and that’s no good. There are, however, various beverages out there that are sweetened with “stevia”, my favorite being Virgil’s Zero. Stevia is a South American herb that has been used as a sweetener by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay for hundreds of years. The leaves of this plant are typically dried and ground up or the extract is used. Either way, be forewarned that you don’t need to use a lot of stevia, as it can be 30 times sweeter than sugar! In addition to its sweet flavor, stevia has no calories and it doesn’t adversely affect blood glucose levels. There are just a couple things to watch out for: one is “Erythritol”. This is a corn-based sugar alcohol that is often used alongside stevia. It can cause abdominal gas and diarrhea because it can’t be thoroughly absorbed by the body. So check the ingredient lists and avoid erythritol whenever possible. Also, avoid stevia products like Truvia because they have been processed with chemical solvents and, in the end they don’t possess the health benefits of the actual stevia plant.
Caffeine won’t hydrate you (and other reasons to avoid it)
I really hate to emphasize the negatives of drinking coffee because it’s a tough habit to break for most folks. Specific to hydration, caffeine makes you urinate, which negates its potential benefit as a fluid! So a cup of coffee in often equals a cup of coffee out – a reason not to count your morning cup of joe toward your total water intake for the day. To add fuel to the fire, the diuretic action of caffeine empties you of important minerals!
Probably the biggest reason not to drink a lot of caffeine is that it creates a big-time vicious cycle for your hormones. Caffeine is a stimulant so a cup of coffee initially gives your body a big burst of energy (the main reason we become addicted to it, right?) After that stimulant effect starts to wear off as the blood levels of caffeine decrease, your blood sugar drops which sends a message to the autonomic nervous system that there is an emergency. Right then, the body switches into “fight or flight” mode in an attempt to respond to this emergency by triggering the release of stress hormones from the adrenal glands. All of this places an additional burden on the adrenals, eventually tiring them out quite a bit. The end result? More overall fatigue and increased anxiety because your body thinks it should be running away from something . . . constantly! In a nutshell, caffeine helps to burn you out. Decaffeinated coffee is an acceptable option, but be sure to look for organic varieties that use a chemical-free decaffeination process.
The long and short of drinking enough water . . .
Your cells need water for energy. The systems of your body need water to flush out the junk. Your tissues need water to stay flexible and elastic.
Although pure, filtered water is what you really need, there are a few acceptable alternatives you can drink to keep things interesting, but you have to read the ingredient lists carefully. Avoiding sugar, caffeine, and other artificial ingredients and chemicals is a must because those will all work against healthy hydration.
The most important takeaway is that something as simple as water intake can have incredibly significant effects on pain, energy, weight, headaches, cardiovascular health and blood pressure, hormones and overall health. So no matter what your health concerns are, addressing your water intake should be your first step. It requires no prescription and costs absolutely nothing. You can’t beat that when it comes to your health!
