Colloidal Silver Benefits: A silver lining for your medicine cabinet? I think so!
by Sue Hughes, MSEd, HHP, CNC
A Colloidal Silver lining that is! For those of you who are not familiar with Colloidal Silver, it is a substance made by suspending microscopic particles of silver in liquid. For centuries it has been known to be an incredibly effective natural antibiotic. In addition to its many medicinal uses throughout history, because Colloidal Silver prevents the growth of algae, bacteria and other unwanted organisms, it also has been used as a preservative for water and milk and as the medium for both water and furnace filtration systems. The use of Colloidal Silver for medicinal purposes began to taper off beginning in the 1940s with the advancement of modern antibiotics, however it is still given to newborns to prevent eye infections during childbirth and it is still used by hospitals for the treatment of cuts and burns.
What makes Colloidal Silver so effective?
According to Dr. Kurt Grange, it acts as a catalyst, disabling a specific enzyme used for reproduction by many forms of bacteria, viruses and fungi. It has been thoroughly studied at the UCLA School of Medicine and it has been found that while most conventional antibiotics are each effective against about a half dozen strains of bacteria, Colloidal Silver is toxic to every strain of fungus, bacteria, protozoa, parasite as well as many viruses that have been tested – more than 650! Larry C. Ford, M.D. of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UCLA School of Medicine states “There is no known disease-causing organism that can live in the presence of even minute traces of the chemical element of simple metallic silver.”
Pathogens DO NOT become resistant to colloidal silver!
An added bonus – the pathogens destroyed by Colloidal Silver do not form a resistance to the substance, unlike those treated with conventional antibiotics. We hear it all the time these days – certain “superbugs” are becoming resistant to conventional pharmaceutical antibiotics, sending everyone into a state of panic. Thankfully, there have been several studies done that show impressive effectiveness of the treatment of pathogens such as staph and MRSA when Colloidal Silver is used in conjunction with modern antibiotics. Actually, Colloidal Silver alone has been shown to kill MRSA when modern antibiotics could not. Pretty impressive.
Will you turn blue from using colloidal silver?
Despite all of the positives, as expected there are still conflicting opinions regarding the safe use of Colloidal Silver in modern times. Many medical establishments continue to rebuke its effectiveness as a germicide despite the research and anecdotal evidence over the years presenting a strong case for its use in this regard. However the great majority of the negative press surrounding Colloidal Silver revolves around a condition called argyria, where the skin and mucous membranes turn gray or blue in color (you may have seen the “blue man” on the Dr. Oz Show a few years back ..) due to overuse of Colloidal Silver. This condition occurs when silver particles deposit in the tissues and oxidize in response to air and sunlight exposure. Those with low Vitamin E levels, low selenium levels or an overall slow metabolism are thought to be more prone to this. It’s important to note, however, that this condition will not occur as long as you consume true Colloidal Silver rather than a silver protein product (which the body will not absorb properly), and, of course, as long as you adhere to the suggested dosage (which is a far cry less than what “blue man” was consuming!)
How can you tell the difference between actual Colloidal Silver and a silver protein product? Well, silver protein (the combination of metallic silver particles and a protein binder) typically claims to contain a very high concentration (ppm) of colloidal silver, i.e. 30-20,000 ppm. In addition to this high concentration of silver, silver protein becomes very foamy for several minutes after it is shaken, while Colloidal Silver does not. Lastly, check the color. If it is an amber or black or any range in between, you probably have silver protein.
Here's how I use colloidal silver ...
I, personally, have found Colloidal Silver to be safe and effective at the recommended dosage. The fact that it has saved my family a trip to the doctor on more than one occasion makes it deserving of a permanent home in my medicine cabinet! At the first sign of illness, I typically take one teaspoonful by mouth (held under my tongue for about 30 seconds prior to swallowing) to stop the germ in its tracks. I repeat this 3-5 times daily until I feel better. Colloidal Silver also makes a great disinfectant, topical antiseptic, or antifungal and appears to be safe for children and pregnant or nursing women. There are those who swear by Colloidal Silver for daily use as part of their general immune health regimen, but I’ve never used it in this manner. Colloidal Silver is not inherently present in the body, so I use it only therapeutically, basically viewing it as a safer and more natural “medicine.” For general immune system support, I prefer those supplemental vitamins and minerals that are made by the body and specifically needed for it to function properly.
